With the ever-increasing reach of the internet, businesses – both small and big – are quickly moving to create a digital presence to further their prospects. It has become de rigueur for organizations to step up and build strong web applications to retain the advantage over their competitors. This can be achieved  by presenting a durable software product to vendors as well as customers by leveraging the latest technology.

PHP and Dot Net are two of the most widely used programming languages for web application development, have a wide user base and are immensely popular among developers.

PHP is an open-source programming language widely used for web development and its code can be embedded in HTML to be used as a server-side scripting language. It makes applications more dynamic, and it can be executed with command-line tools and GUI applications.

It was developed and released in 1995 by Rasmus Lerdorf and Zend technologies, with its latest stable release announced in 2018. Written in C and C++, PHP development is simple, efficient, and secure and is widely used to build small web applications.

PHP development enables the code to be easily embedded into the HTML source document and allows interaction with different operating systems. Being an object-oriented programming language, it has the ability to call Windows and Java objects and can also create classes.

Dot Net is a software framework that mainly runs on Microsoft Platforms or Windows. It is a layer between an operating system and the programming languages and makes it easy for developers to write code in any language.

Developed by Microsoft, Dot Net was launched in 2002, with both licenced and open-source versions, and supports multiple programming languages such as C#, Vb.net, J#, managed C++ etc.

Dot Net has a CTS (Common Type System) that allows interaction between applications and libraries developed using a compatible Dot Net development language. All applications built using the Dot Net programming language are provided with a common security model as well as multiple security features. Dot Net development allows easy access to functionalities and interactions between newer and older applications outside its native environment.

In this post, we look at both PHP and Dot Net, and understand what the major points of difference between the two programming languages are.

Language Support

PHP is a simple scripting language, whereas Dot Net supports multiple languages such as C#, Visual Basic, Python etc.

Features

PHP development is less advanced as compared to Dot Net. C#, the most commonly used Dot Net development language, provides impeccable features such as delegates, Lambda expressions, and Language Integrated Query (LINQ).

Design and Implementation

Designing applications using PHP development is less efficient as compared to Dot Net. Dot Net development on the other hand is much easier and is more expressive with its highly intuitive IDE (Visual Studio).

Compatibility

The PHP programming language helps build cross-platform applications that can be run in Linux, Unix, Windows, and Solaris. Although the Dot Net programming language was developed by Windows, it can run on Linux as well with additional components.

Web Development

The PHP programming language is mainly used for web development, although supported frameworks can also be used to add robust features. ASP.NET is the web technology used in the Dot Net services framework, which needs an Internet Information Server (IIS) to run applications.

Common Databases

PHP mainly uses MySQL, but it can also be used in conjunction with other databases, whereas Dot Net services are primarily employed with Microsoft SQL server.
